Now perhaps the online site you refer to has a block of cabins on hold but for Joe Blow, no can do. The current President of Princess Cruises is a Marketing person. I've never found marketing people to be in touch with reality. But someone at Princess needs to go back to business school because they are badly dropping the ball in this area IMHO. From 2017 on is when I began booking some Princess cruises elsewhere in an attempt to get a bit of additional OBC. Being in Canada somewhat limits this option though we can book with any travel agent most of them don’t want to deal with booking in $Canadian with Princess. Princess always has their own “$Canadian” pricing which is at a set exchange rate that seems to be an attempt to provide a slightly better exchange rate than the current bank exchange rate. This rate doesn’t change every day, it can stay put for months when the true exchange rate isn’t too volatile. Also, going this route eliminates the credit card company from adding another 2.5% or so conversion fee if we had paid in $US.

I worked with my Planner somewhat for an April cruise and sent an e-mail early Thanksgiving week asking about the $1 deposits and if they apply to as particular 2024 cruise I was interested in booking. I got an autoreply back quickly stating that this person was on vacation. No issues, people deserve time off but it seems strange that it would be taken during Black Friday/$1 deposit times.

I think many of us who use TAs don't need hand holding. The most experienced travelers out there realize the benefit of Travel Agents and the benefit of having them on their side. If all goes well - they do our bookings and all is well. It is when things go wrong - we realize their weight in gold.

Really, my expectations aren't much different for anyone handling my business. In any case, this was not a question of "what should I have done," it was regarding planner expectations. I would suggest, that since you booked through a PVP exclusively for many years, you really have absolutely no idea if "they took good care of you." The original Vacation Planner assigned to me pre-covid19 never did anything for me. A new planner was assigned to me in the past year and he has been a breath of fresh air.
Technically - you were one of the reasons why Princess changed the policy (not you personally but people who acted like you). You would call Princess and make price adjustments, use their staff until right before final payment and then transfer it to your agent to get a better price. Your TA had to do very little compared to what Princess did and he got the commission. In your situation - Princess probably should have gotten the commission for making all the adjustments for you before transfer.
If you use a travel agent to book cruises, you are terra non grata and become the "property" of the travel agent you book with, so if you have a TA you won't hear from PVPs and will not have one assigned to you. If you’re cruising on Regal or Royal Princess (or another ship with an Alfredo’s restaurant), consider having your lunch here on embarkation day, while your fellow cruisers still don’t realize it’s included. The buffet will be busy that first day, so avoid it if you can. 👆 You can look for onboard activities in the journeyview section of the Princess app once you are on the cruise ship.
